Identifying Abuse of Elderly and Disabled Residents in Nursing Homes
Identifying abuse is sometimes very evident such as: open pressure wounds, medication errors, falls from medical lifts during transfers, and many other types of elder neglect. There are also less obvious forms of elder abuse including: infectious diseases (MRSA, VRE, C-Diff), due to a lack of hygiene practices, Urinary Tract Infections, physical and sexual abuse or more difficult to always identify.
Review the Facilities History
The state of Minnesota Office of Health Facility Complaints, OHFC, is responsible for the investigation, their website has summaries of past incidents of neglect at a facility.
There is a Minnesota Adult Abuse Reporting Center, MAARC, which has a toll free number answered 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.
